As I read through this article, I just kept realizing how much work being a teacher is... whew... (not saying I don't want to handle it, just wow, all the things we keep up with!) So, we should be taking notes on students, in different possible ways, so that we can keep track of their behavior. I hardly find time during the day to take note of what they are learning, much less behavior. I think this case study is going to be great practice for focusing on behavior while doing all of the other things we do. I am interested in hearing more about how all of you are planning to track this.
I'm also interested in hearing more about how you work with other teachers to deal with behavior. I often feel like my school has an every (wo)man for themselves mentality, and behavior is not addressed on a schoolwide level. How do other schools deal with this? What have you found helpful when dealing with behavior with your CTs and PLCs?

ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing. We have a ton to do as teachers. In my post, I wrote about how teachers have to think of the practical ways to keep up with all this stuff.
Also, I know it has to help to have everyone on the same page when it comes to behavior. For my 3rd grade team, we are all on the credit/debit system I talked about in my last post. Because the whole 3rd grade is on this system, any teacher is able to give credits or debits to children maybe not in their own class. I can tell that this is beneficial because the children know that they are constantly being watched. Hopefully next year we will be in a school where this unified approach on behavior can be found!!!

ReplyDeleteI thought it was interesting that you talked about how overwhelming teaching can be! Especially when you said "I can barely keep track of what they are learning" - I feel the same way sometimes. After observing a lesson that I taught the other day, my supervisor suggested that I make sure to scan the room with my eyes more frequently as to make sure all students are involved (she said I need to learn how to have eyes in the back of my head). But seriously, as a student teacher, it has taken some getting used to in the area of knowing everything that is going on at all times. I am hoping that few years of teaching experience will allow me to become better in this area!
